Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a maroon Greek cross bearing five white flashes radiant from the center, one of the flashes vertical and pointing to the apex, and on a gold undulating border enclosing the cross scarlet oak leaves, all in front of four gold acorns one at each outer corner of the border.

Symbolism
Maroon and white are colors used for the Army Medical Department.  Scarlet, the color of the Meritorious Unit Commendation ribbon, refers to the units decoration for service in World War II; the oak leaves and acorns which allude to the forests of the Ardennes-Alsace area additionally signify courage and devotion.  The five flashes indicate the units participation in five European campaigns, World War II.  The flashes together with the cross, an emblem of aid and assistance, also denote the effective speed of the Battalions evacuation service, emergency and resuscitative treatment.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 18 March 1971.
